Since 1989 Mr. Shin has been serving sushi and became the sole owner of Michi
Japanese Restaurant in 1999. He began his sushi training under the tutelage of
Mr. Kim, a distinguished sushi chef with a lifetime of experience in Japanese
cuisine. Mr. Shin trained with Mr. Kim in his spare time while working as a
kitchen chef at Mr. Kim's restaurant.
Once Mr. Shin became a master sushi chef, he started his own catering business
making bento boxes for takeout lunches. Within one month of time, his catering
business garnered 100% of the market share for lunch catering in his area. But
the hours were long and hard. Mr. Shin decided to return to the restaurant
business and spent five years as a sushi chef in South San Jose. When a local
CPA offered him co-ownership of a sushi restaurant in Newark, Mr. Shin packed up
his family and moved. After a few years, the CPA bought Mr. Shin out. So Mr.
Shin headed down to Campbell where he found Michi Japanese Restaurant being run
by a Korean woman named Mrs. Kim. Mrs. Kim hired Mr. Shin to run her four-seat
sushi bar and after six months, he bought Michi from her. Over the next three
and a half years Mr. Shin brought about significant improvements to Michi, both
in the menu and in the building structure.
The unique menu coupled with Mr. Shin's warm and friendly reception has made
Michi Japanese Restaurant a thriving venture, even during the economic downturn.
Our loyal customers - "The Michi Family" - make up over 90% of our sales. Mr.
Shin excels at developing strong relationships with his patrons. Thus, most of
our new customers are introduced to Michi through referrals rather than
advertising. Mr. Shin, the staff, and the great food only keep them coming back.
Since the opening day, Michi has grown through lots of exciting changes, and
Michi and the Michi Family expect to see more changes to come over the next few
years. Mr. Shin, with his excellent management strategy, has put together a
management team to propel Michi into another growth cycle. Some of the
individuals on the Michi Management Team have strong experience in accounting,
marketing, sales, and team building. With this talented group of people, Mr.
Shin will focus on establishing a high-end catering company to fill a niche for
great sushi and Japanese cuisine. Michi will target weddings, corporate events,
and private parties.
At the request of our customers who come from places far beyond Campbell, Michi
will also expand into surrounding bay area cities like Los Gatos, Los Altos,
Saratoga, Palo Alto, and beyond.
